Doors

Doors very often present a huge barrier to our clients. Over the years Aging-In-Place Remodeling has modified hundreds of doorways to make them more accessible. Our company has compiled a wide variety of solutions to help homeowners deal with any door or entry way impediment they may face. Some of the reasons we are requested to look at doors are: not wide enough to access, the swinging of the door impedes access, the handle and pushing/pulling of the door are difficult to perform, door movement is not smooth, etc. Below are some of the solutions Aging-In-Place Remodeling uses to help our client’s make their home more use friendly.

Door Widening

Our most common request is to widen a homeowner’s current doorway. This is particularly true in older homes where it is common to find doorways that are 24” to 30”. Since the standard wheelchair is 26” these doorway widths are impassable. Aging-In-Place Remodeling is usually able to install doors out to at least 36” if not more. Sometimes what we are able to do is dictated by the structure of the home but we are always able to make some sort of improvement. Sliding/Pocket/Barn Doors

Traditional swinging doors present multiple issues to those facing mobility challenges. The large swing path, the need to open/close the door while staying out of the path of travel, the dexterity required to use the handle while moving out of the way, can all present obstacles. One of the best means to address these issues is to modify the door to travel in a linear path rather than an arc. We do this by changing from a swing door to either a pocket door (inside the wall) or a sliding/barn door (on the outside of the wall).

Exterior Doors

Being outdoors is important to a safe and happy life. The ability to get oneself outside is fundamental to our well-being and critical as a means of egress in case of emergency. To those with reduced mobility, exterior doors can present many hurdles. Aging-In-Place Remodeling works with specific vendors who manufacture doors that are constructed specifically for ADA compliance and ease of use. Often times, when combined with one of our custom ramp solutions, exterior doors become as easy to use as one of our interior doorways.

Automated Doors

Automated door openers can provide an independence like no other product is capable of. With the ability to unlock a door and open it with the push of a button an Automated door opener can quickly change how you move around your home. Typically installed in just a few hours an automated door opener can be installed on virtually any type of swinging door, whether interior or exterior. In fact, we have installed these openers on exterior gates too. Aging-In-Place Remodeling is a dealer for Open Sesame Door Openers located here in California that has been making reliable, trouble-free, automated openers for years.
